How to Have Twins? Improve Your Chances of Having Twins

How to have twins?

Many couples plan to have twins when planning their family and future.

Just because you want to conceive twins doesn’t mean you will. Also, no amount of prayer or good deeds will help you magically have twins.

Studies show that only 1 out of 250 pregnant women ever give birth to twins.

But does that mean having twins is always left to chance?

No, it’s not. You can do a few things to ensure the birth of twin children.

In this article, we discussed several practices you can follow to increase your chances of having twin children.

How to Have Twins?

How to Have Twins?

First, let’s understand how twin birth works. This happens when a single fertilized egg gets split into two eggs and implanted in the uterus. This works in one of two ways. The split can happen before the implantation or after the implantation.

When this happens, both babies end up having the same DNA. Within your identical twins, there are different variations you can try. However, other variations also happen during twin pregnancy. Both babies may not share the liquid-filled membrane (amniotic fluid sac) during a twin pregnancy.

In some cases, both babies may have the same placenta or their one. However, it’s important to know that babies who share their amniotic fluid sac during twin birth generally tend to have pregnancy complications.

Fraternal Twins

There’s another type of twin you may have. This is called fraternal twins. In this case, the ovaries release two eggs and two of those eggs get fertilized by two different sperms. In this case, the twins share half of the same gene. You can call the fraternal twins’ siblings like normal siblings are born. In this case, they are born together but not practically twinning due to the same sperm.

Chances of Having Common Twins

Chances of Having Common Twins

Only one among three twin pregnancies appears to be a proper or common twin pregnancy caused by the same sperm.  However, fraternal twin are more common in most cases. In most cases, almost three to five identical twins are born among 1000 babies worldwide.

What Helps You Have Twins?

What Helps You Have Twins

As per Healthline research, only one woman out of 250 can expect to have twin. Now, if you are planning to have babies (most importantly, twins), you can’t just pray for it and expect it to work.

Several factors cause twin pregnancies; you can try to conceive a twin baby. Now, remember, these are the factors that cause twin pregnancies. But the chances of having twin are still too thin and not completely under your control.

But, if you want to believe in the process and at least try it, here are two methods you must know about. Here is how to have twins –

In Vitro Fertilization

One of the common ways of conceiving twin is through a fertility treatment called Clomid, Gomal-F, Follistim, etc. These can help you conceive multiple babies if you are planning to.

These medicines are prescribed to women who conceive before going through any IVF treatment. In many cases, it can also help them conceive a twin.

During this process, the eggs of a woman and the sperm of a man are collected for fertilization. Hence, they incubate it in a specialized library to help the embryo form.

Once the embryo forms, the doctor places it inside the woman’s uterus. This will help them grow the embryo. This is the process of conception and it’s done through a medical procedure.  There are also chances for a woman to conceive multiple babies simultaneously.

Fertility Drugs

The second process for having twins involves increasing the chances of producing more eggs inside the ovaries. There are some fertility drugs for women that help them produce more eggs, thereby increasing the possibility of getting twin.

However, for this process, you have to contact your gynecologist. They can prescribe medicines like Clomiphene & gonadotropins.  However, before taking these medicines alone, consider talking to your gynecologist. Take this medicine only if your doctor recommends it for twin pregnancy

Also, many fertility medicines help with conceiving twin. Standard medicine includes Follicle Stimulating Hormone with LH (Luteinizing Hormone).

These hormones increase the chance of conceiving twin. Both hormones are naturally produced in a woman’s body every month. So, when someone wants to conceive twin, injecting these hormones is often suggested by doctors. However, this injection is given to women who have difficulty producing eggs for giving birth.

Natural Ways to Conceive Twins

No method confirms the chances of having twin. However, if you were wondering how to have twin naturally, then here are a few things to remember –

  • Age: you can try when you are over 35. Women aged above 35 have a higher chance of releasing multiple eggs, increasing the chances of twin pregnancy.
  • Family history: having fraternal twin is also a luck. If someone from your mother’s side had fraternal twins, you’d have a higher chance of having twin.
  • Weight: women with a BMI of above 30 have a higher chance of conceiving twin. So, you’ll need to put on a little more weight.
  • Breastfeeding: breastfeeding boosts the production of prolactin, which can help you conceive twins.
  • Dairy: Keep dairy in your diet. Consuming dairy-based food can increase the chances of having twins.
  • Gap before conception: before you try to conceive again, leave a gap. This is one way to increase your chances of having a twin.
  • Stopping birth control: Stop taking birth control pills to increase your chances of having twins.

Again, remember that these are some lifestyle choices many people claim to help with a better pregnancy. In most cases, women take fertility treatment for twin pregnancies.

Other Factors for Having Twins

If you are wondering how to have twins, the answer might stay hidden in your family tree. If there is any family record for either of the parents to have identical or fraternal twin, they have a higher chance of giving birth to a twin.

In most cases, if the history of the maternal parent has a history of having twin in their bloodline, they have a better chance of producing more eggs.

The drugs used for causing twin pregnancy are generally not made to help you give birth to twins. Typically, these medicines help you induce ovulation by assisting women to produce more egg follicles. In most cases, this medicine is prescribed when women have some issues with ovulating.

In general, these are medicines for helping women treat infertility. Sometimes, these medicines can also do a great job and help with conceiving twin.

Both of these medication methods have pregnancy rates up to 5 to 12 percent.  Women with IVF treatment have up to 20% to 30% chance of having a twin. Also, if you would want to have identical twins over parental twins or fraternal twins, then IVF is a great treatment method to induce it.

Also, the IUI or Intrauterine Insemination process can help in conceiving twin. In this case, the chances of having twins are higher than in natural conception.

Factors that affect the chances of having twins

Factors that affect the chances of having twins

We have already mentioned that the family tree is very much responsible for giving you the chance to have twins. However, various other factors affect the chances of someone having twin.

Age

Women over 30 tend to secret more Follicle Stimulating Hormones naturally. So, it’s easier for women aged above 30 or between 30 and 35 to have higher chances of giving birth to twin. The hormone usually focuses on developing eggs in the ovaries before they release these eggs into the uterus.

Height & Weight

Women who have higher weight tend to have higher chances of giving birth to twins. The extra fat in their body helps them with secreting Estrogen. This hormone is responsible for the stimulation of the ovaries.

Also, height is another factor closely related to a woman’s chance of giving birth to twins. Women taller than 164.8 cm have a higher chance of giving birth to twins.

The practical explanation behind these reasons suggests that healthier and taller women have higher chances of giving birth to twin.

Diet

It’s also said that your diet has an impact on the chances of you conceiving twins. If you want to conceive twins, you should consume food that improves fertility. You can start with citrus food, beetroot, matured cheese, liver, cooked tomatoes, lentils & beans, pomegranate, walnuts, oysters, sunflower seeds, etc.

Wrapping Up

While it might sound wholesome and beautiful for a couple to have twins, it’s not without risks. In most cases, women with twin babies tend to have pregnancy complications. Also, if you are trying any medical procedures for having twin, always consult with your doctor before trying anything on your own. So, if you are thinking about how to have twins with drug assistance, give it time and think about the risks and if you are ready for them.

It’s best to leave some decisions to the unknown if you are not confident about any IVF or IUI methods. Hopefully, this article was helpful. Let us know if you have any queries related to the same.
