Understanding Fertility Can You Get Pregnant Right Before Your Period

“Understanding Fertility: Can You Get Pregnant Right Before Your Period?”

It is not that easy to get pregnant. There is a tiny window that women get for getting pregnant. So if you are curious and searching answers for to the question, “Can you get pregnant right before your period starts” the answer would be easy. The answer is yes. But certain factors need to work in your favor.

It is nothing impossible, but the chances are less to get pregnant as you get close to your period. You can get pregnant in only a short span of five to six days. Can you ovulate before your period and get pregnant? Ovulation generally occurs in the middle of the cycle, mostly two weeks before you get your period. But it is important to remember that everyone has a different cycle, and not everyone’s circle is regular.

Let’s study the menstrual cycle first.

Let’s study the menstrual cycle first.

Generally, an average menstrual cycle consists of 28 days, and the first day of menstruation Is considered the first day of the cycle. Around this time, getting pregnant is uncommon because the time when you are most fertile is not until a week or so.

Your body starts to release a hormone known as the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the 6th day of the cycle to the 14th day of the cycle. This hormone helps the egg to develop in the ovary. This is when the uterus starts building the endometrial lining in the uterus. The chance of getting pregnant is a little bit more during this time.

Inside a female body, sperm can survive up to five days, so when the egg develops, it can still be present there. When the egg is mature, the body starts releasing luteinizing hormone(LH), which triggers the release of the egg from the ovary.

Ovulation usually happens around the 14th day of the cycle. The chance of getting pregnant on ovulation day is possible. There is no perfect time for ovulation. It cannot be said that it always happens clockwise. Considering the midpoint of the menstrual cycle, it can happen four days before the midpoint or four days after the midpoint.

So this means if you start ovulating later or if you get your period early, then there is a chance that you can get pregnant if you just have sex days before getting your period.

What can happen if your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days?

What can happen if your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days

Many people don’t have a 28-day cycle, some people have a concise cycle of 21 days, and some can have a very long cycle of 35 days. Well, only 30% of women get their fertile window between the 10th and 17th day of their cycle.  And only10 % of women ovulate 14 days before they get their next period.

Ovulation gets affected by many factors. Poor diet and stress are one of the biggest reasons that alter the ovulation date. Medical conditions like amenorrhea or PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) can also tamper with the ovulation date. Sometimes the menstrual cycle gets irregular because of perimenopause or because of the hormonal changes during adolescence.

Determining the midpoint of your menstrual cycle to track your ovulation is better. But using a birth control method is better if you have a different cycle length every month.

If you are trying to conceive, it is better if you track your ovulation so that you can understand when you are most fertile and plan accordingly. And you can do that in three different ways.

  • Basal body temperature tracking
  • Using an ovulation predictor kit
  • Using a fertility monitor.

It is best to try making a baby just before your ovulation starts. This will buy some time for the sperm to reach the fallopian tube to meet the egg. And if you miss the chance and don’t get pregnant, then you have to wait for the next cycle to start again.

Dr. Jane Frederick, a reproductive endocrinologist and OB-GYN at the HRC facility said, “It isn’t likely that a woman would get pregnant right before her period.”

This is because of ovulation; it is not the time when your body will release the egg. There is a short window when this happens, and the chances are high.

Generally, ovulation starts two weeks before your period in the middle of the cycle, and by the time you get your period, the egg is gone. If you have unprotected sex just before getting your period, then it is likely that you don’t even take any emergency contraception as the chances of getting pregnant are very low.
