Marlon Wayans Talked About His Older Child Being Transgender: Discusses His Transition As A Parent
Marlon Wayans is finally talking about a certain change in his family life.
The 51-year-old comedian made an appearance on The Breakfast Club Friday and talked about how his elder child is trans.
He said, “I have a daughter that transitioned into a son. My daughter Amai is now Kai.”
Then Wayans talked about what the entire experience was actually like for him as a normal parent and how he manages to address the same in a comedy special that is coming up, potentially known as Rainbow Child.
In this context, he said, “My transition as a parent, going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance. I think there are a lot of parents out there who need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it. It’s been a very painful situation for me, but it’s one of the best, funniest hours [of comedy] I could ever imagine.”
Wayans called Kai ‘brilliant’ and ‘the most well-read, the smartest Wayans.’ While he did admit that he is not really a perfect parent, Wayans spoke about Kai, “They know I love them. They see me trying, and I’m happy, but I have to respect their wishes.”
Apart from his 23-year-old daughter Kai, he has a 21-year-old son called Shawn with his ex-partner, Angelica Zachary. In the current special of Wayans, Good Grief, he discusses the pain of losing over thirty loved ones in the past three years. Now, he feels like it is so much more critical than ever for his kids to enjoy freedom.
He said, “I want them to be free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves. The more you know yourself, the more you can govern yourself; the more you live your truth, the happier your existence. If they can’t get that in the household with their father and their mother, how the f— do I send them out into the world with that kind of confidence? I’m just so proud of them being them.”
